Show HN: Helios – what plug-in solar could generate for any address in Britain
Plug-in solar panels (no electrician needed) have just become legal in the UK and will go on sale soon. Helios estimates how much electricity a typical installation could generate at a given address and what that's worth against your tariff. It uses UK government LIDAR data to reflect the actual skyline, so it knows whether there's a building or a hill blocking the sun. Caveats: - Outside LIDAR coverage (most of Scotland and Wales) it falls back to a synthetic horizon (less accurate). - Trees and recent developments (post-2022 or so) may not be in the data, and some address placements could be off (geocoding via OSM). Feedback on the shading model especially welcome. Comments URL: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48334949 Points: 60 # Comments: 14

Google Cloud Suspends Railway's Production Account, Causing Eight-Hour Platform-Wide Outage
Google Cloud's automated systems suspended Railway's production account without notice, triggering an eight-hour platform-wide outage affecting 3 million users. The cascade took down workloads across all providers including AWS and bare metal because Railway's control plane was hosted on GCP. Railway is demoting GCP to backup-only status. The Critical State of Cyberspacs
NATO is currently in a ‘grey zone’: increasingly being challenged in cyberspace while unable to attribute attacks, thus failing to deter. Simultaneously, many governments, businesses, and populations depend on the Internet and the cloud to function properly. This is a dangerous situation, since global Internet connectivity could get disrupted and destabilised. This chapter explains the basic principles from an overall technological perspective, and discusses the challenge of anti-access and area denial (A2/AD) in the context of global Internet disruptions. What is the contested area, what are possible effects, and can those effects be limited? Using a layered approach, we define the cyber ‘high ground’ as maintenance of and control over critical infrastructure, from core to edge, from hardware to software. To ensure each cyber ‘area’ can be protected in isolation but still allow global cooperation, we argue it is important to control which paths data takes in the network, similar to ai
PAN-OS GlobalProtect Authentication Bypass (CVE-2026-0257) Under Active Exploitation
Palo Alto Networks has warned that a recently disclosed medium-severity security flaw impacting PAN-OS and Prisma Access has come under active exploitation in the wild. The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-0257 (CVSS score: 7.8), refers to a case of authentication bypass that could be exploited by bad actors to set up VPN connections. "Authentication bypass vulnerabilities in the
How Meta Rebuilt Data Ingestion for Petabyte-Scale Reliability
The engineering team at Meta recently outlined how the company migrated a data ingestion platform that transfers several petabytes of MySQL social graph data daily to improve reliability and operational efficiency. The team used techniques like reverse shadowing and continuous checksum monitoring to ensure zero downtime during the transition. By Renato Losio

Show HN: Open-source private home security camera system (end-to-end encryption)
Hey everyone, I previously introduced an open source private home security camera in 2024, which uses OpenMLS for end-to-end encryption: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42284412. It was called Privastead then and it's now renamed to Secluso. John Kaczman found my project from here and has been working on it with me over the last year and half. We've made a lot of improvements to the software, which we would like to share with you: - You can now set this up on your Raspberry Pi in less than 5 minutes with no technical expertise using our easy-to-use GUI deploy tool. We've put together a comprehensive build-your-own guide that walks you through the required steps (you can find a link at the top of the repository README). - We use a customized, minimal OS based on the Yocto project for the camera. - Every part of our stack except for the iOS app has reproducible builds. This includes our Android app, camera/server binaries, deploy tool, and the aforementioned OS. - We've re-designed
